The short answer

Wash weekly or use a waterless wash between full washes, dry with a dedicated drying towel before water spots form, top your protection every few months, and wipe the interior down after each wash. Skip automatic brush washes, dish soap, and air drying. Those three habits undo a detail faster than anything else.

Most people undo a detail within weeks

Not on purpose. They run through an automatic car wash, grab the wrong soap, or let water sit and spot on the paint. A proper detail can last 3 to 6 months with the right habits. Without them, you're looking at 4 to 6 weeks before the car starts losing that just-detailed look.

This is the routine we walk through with every customer. It takes about 20 minutes, works for coated and uncoated vehicles, and doesn't need a garage full of equipment. Every product mentioned here is on our product recommendations page with how to use it.

Quick note

If your vehicle has a ceramic coating, like the Shine Supply Beadlock and System X MAX G+ coatings we install, a few steps differ from a waxed or unprotected car. We call those out as we go.

Step 1: Wash weekly, or as close as you can

The biggest factor in how long a detail lasts isn't the products. It's how often you wash. Bird droppings, tree sap, and industrial fallout are acidic, and in Texas heat they start etching the clear coat within hours.

You don't need a full wash every time. A waterless wash handles light dust and road film in about 15 minutes without a hose. We use Eco Shine with a plush 600 GSM towel like the Cosmo. It's also the fastest fix after morning sprinklers or a rain storm, before the minerals dry and etch.

For coated vehicles

Use a soap that's safe for ceramic coatings. Most pH-neutral car soaps are fine, but avoid anything with wax or sealant additives, which can leave a film on top of the coating and dull the water beading.

For uncoated vehicles

Any pH-neutral car wash soap works. Avoid dish soap. It strips whatever protection is on the paint and dries out rubber trim.

Step 2: Dry right away, never air dry

Water spots are one of the most common ways people damage paint between details. DFW water is hard, and when it evaporates on a hot panel, those minerals etch into the clear coat.

Dry the car immediately with a large twist loop drying towel. We use the Drying Dutchman, which will dry a full size truck on its own. Skip the leaf blower. It pulls in outside air and can fire small particles across the paint at high speed.

Pro tip

Dry in the shade when you can. In direct Texas sun, water evaporates before you get to it, especially on dark vehicles.

Step 3: Top your protection every few months

Coated cars: a ceramic-safe booster every 2 to 3 months restores water beading and extends the life of the coating. Apply it after a wash, and it takes about 10 minutes for the whole car. Don't put wax on a coating.

Uncoated cars: a silica wax or spray wax every 4 to 6 weeks after washing does the same job. Level it with a clean plush towel.

Step 4: Interior, 5 minutes after every wash

While the exterior dries, hit the interior. In Texas, UV and heat speed up fading and cracking on unprotected surfaces.

  • Dash, doors, and console: a one-step cleaner and protectant like Clean N Shine on a towel. It leaves a satin, non-greasy finish with UV protection.
  • Leather: a light clean once a month with Leather & Interior Cleaner, followed by Leather Conditioner. Heat, sweat, and body oils break leather down fast here.
  • Glass and screens: an ammonia-free cleaner like Sun Shine, then a final pass with a dry towel to remove haze. If the inside of the windshield has a foggy film, start with a magic eraser.
  • Buttons and vents: dry brush them with a soft detail brush to loosen dust without spraying chemicals.

What to avoid

  • Automatic brush and tunnel washes. The brushes and fabric strips cause swirl marks and undo paint correction instantly. Touchless washes are fine in an emergency, but their strong chemicals can wear down coatings.
  • Dish soap or household cleaners on paint or interior surfaces. They strip protection and dry out rubber and leather.
  • Wax over a ceramic coating. It doesn't bond properly, creates a film that attracts dirt, and can look blotchy.
  • Bath towels or paper towels. Even soft household towels can cause light scratching. Use microfiber only, and wash towel types separately.

When to call us back

Even with a solid routine, some things are beyond a weekly wash. Book a maintenance detail when you notice:

  • Water no longer beads strongly, a sign the protection is wearing down
  • Light swirls or haze showing in direct sunlight
  • Tree sap, tar, or overspray that won't come off with a normal wash
  • The interior looking dull or losing that clean smell

Most customers with a ceramic coating come back once or twice a year for a maintenance detail. Without a coating, a mobile detail every 3 to 4 months keeps most vehicles in good shape.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a professional detail last?

With good habits, the results of a detail can last 3 to 6 months. Without them, most cars start losing that just-detailed look in 4 to 6 weeks. Weekly washing, proper drying, and a protection topper make the biggest difference.

How often should I wash my car after a detail?

Weekly, or as close to it as you can. A waterless wash covers light dust and road film between full washes without needing a hose.

Can I take my car through an automatic car wash after a detail?

Avoid brush and tunnel washes. They cause swirl marks that undo paint correction. Touchless washes are fine in a pinch, but their strong chemicals can wear down protection and coatings over time.

Should I wax over a ceramic coating?

No. Wax does not bond properly to a coating and can leave a film that attracts dirt and dulls the water beading. Use a ceramic-safe booster or topper instead.

How often should I condition leather seats in Texas?

A light clean once a month followed by a conditioner keeps leather soft and protected from heat, sweat, and body oils.

When should I book my next detail?

Coated vehicles do well with a maintenance detail once or twice a year. Without a coating, every 3 to 4 months keeps most vehicles in good shape.
